  4. How was the tiny mountain pass disadvatageous to the large Persian

“ The performance of the defenders at the battle of Thermopylae is often used as an example of the advantages of training, equipment and good use of terrain to maximise an army’s potential, as well as a symbol of courage against extremely overwhelming odds.”

  1. What were some characteristics that made Leonidus a legend and model of heroism?
  2. Describe some characteristics of the culture in Sparta and perhaps why Leonidus was the type of warrior he was. 
  3. What is the significance of the following quote: “Go tell the Spartans, passer-by,

That here, obedient to their laws, we lie.”

 Watch the following video and write one paragraph about the character of Leonidus. Does the film seem to portray him accurately?

Click “Aftermath” on the side bar.

Answer the following questions:

  1. What happened to Leonidas’ body?
  2. Which two Spartans survived the war?
  3. What did the Greeks do with their dead?
